You Gave Me a Song is a new feature documentary about legendary old-time and bluegrass musician Alice Gerrard.
At the age of eighty-three, Alice Gerrard continues to perform, teach, write music, and, when time allows, work on a book project that draws from her personal photo archive and unique musical journey. The film captures Gerrard performing with friends and collaborators and celebrates her contributions to the cultural revolutions of the 20th century– breaking new ground for women in bluegrass with singing partner Hazel Dickens and challenging segregation during an interracial music tour across the South.
As she looks back, Alice balances all of the riches in her life and continues to create music that defies easy categorization, celebrates tradition and modernity, and inspires the next generation of Americana musicians.
